The Science of Scent: How We Choose Fragrances for Our Hand-Poured Candles

Updated: Aug 10, 2023

At our Lumiriam studio, we take our scent creating seriously. We believe that a fragrance can have a deep and profound effect on the ambiance of a space. A fragrance can transport you in time and reignite memories while a variety of feelings from relaxation, energizing or setting the mood for a romantic moment. But how are these fragrances created to go into our hand-poured candles?

The first step is for us to identify the purpose of the candle. Will this candle be one to create a calming atmosphere perfect for meditation, or will it be one that will energize the senses allowing for a perfect work environment? Will this be a candle used to evoke a feeling of romance or add a level of warmth and sophistication to a space? Each purpose will require different scent notes that will allow for us to create the perfect blend curating a fragrance that is truly unique and elegant.

Next, we consider the fragrance notes that will best suit the purpose. Fragrance notes are the individual scents that make up a fragrance, such as floral, citrus, or woody. We select notes based on their properties and the associations they evoke. For example, lavender is known for its calming properties, while lemon is energizing and refreshing

Once we have a list of potential fragrance notes, we begin blending them to create a unique scent that captures the essence of the purpose. This is where the artistry comes in, as we experiment with different combinations and ratios until we find the perfect balance

But there's also a scientific aspect to scent selection. Fragrances interact with our sense of smell in complex ways, and we must consider how different notes will blend together and change over time. For example, certain fragrance notes may be overpowering in the beginning but fade over time, while others may take a while to fully develop

To ensure consistency and quality, we also consider factors such as the concentration of fragrance oil in the wax, the type of wax used, and the wick size. All of these elements can affect the performance and longevity of the candle. We strive to provide our customers with long lasting quality candles that give off a truly spectacular fragrance.

In the end, the art of creating fragrances through the blending of scents is both science and art, both which can be a lot of fun. We love developing new fragrances and seeing how our customers react. If you're looking for a candle that will enhance your mood and create a beautiful ambiance in your home, consider trying one of our hand-poured candles. We're confident you'll love the scent as much as we do
